Thai/Western Relationship Tips

  • Take your time getting to know each other

  • Learn about each others culture

  • Learn about the regional culture of your partner, the area they were born and grew up in.

  • Learn each others language to as good a degree as you possibly can.

  • Learning the language of your partner is the gateway to a deeper understanding of the country and it's culture.

  • Avoid criticising a Thai where ever possible, whether personal or constructed criticism. There are ways to do this
see the main article referred to below.

  • Have as many ''Mai pen rai'' moments as possible. If it's not important then forget it. Why make a mountain out of
a mole hill and disrupt the harmony.

  • Thais like to smile and we should all smile more. However beware the Thai smile can be for many more reasons
than just being happy and contented.

  • Give each other space to pursue own interests and have own friends.

  • Early agreement in the relationship on issues like ''money and support'' ''family/parents'' '' bringing up children''
''beliefs and values'' and ''which country you live in'' will be a tremendously helpful start.

Just Married A Thai Lady And Living In The Uk

  • Arrivai in the UK for a Thai lady between the months of March - October is far more preferable in the weather
sense. The weather during these months is far nicer and more comfortable for a settling in process.

  • Thais love their food and by that I mean ''Thai food''. Important is locating a decent oriental ingredients shop and
even better still if the proprietor is Thai.

  • Home sickness is of course a problem so having communication avenues with family members back in Thailand
is key. The downloading of skype is a crucial bit of investment and of course the Thais love the cell phone.

  • An issue that causes many problems between the Thai and the westerner is the subject of financial support for
the family. Bear in mind the Thai will still need to support the parents by sending money home and this will
always continue. How much and how often will need to be sorted out between the two of you straight away and
implemented in to the family budget.

  • The issue of financial support is something the Thai male will of course understand and honour, but it is more
difficult for the westerner to grasp. Gentle and compromising discussion is the way forward in this one alongside
learning about the issue. (see main article at the end here and related books)

  • Thais like to be surrounded by family and friends. As she will be apart from family members, make sure she has
Thai friends she can visit or that can visit her for food, chat and general company.

  • A real mistake will be to try and glue her to the house (whilst you are at work) with nothing to do and no one to
    talk to.

  • With Thailand being very much a face culture take great care with direct or even indirect criticism, laying blame
or complaining. It will be taken very personally by the Thai.

  • I stand by what I said about making sure she has Thai friends, but do be careful of one of those friends usually
found in a Thai group of women. The advisor or the queen bee she is the one that leaves a general trail of
negative gossip and poison about all in sundry. Beware of this one.
